The transition from cradle to bed can be a problem for some children; leaving a safe, protective and familiar environment can be difficult and traumatic. Although no parent would want to let their child down during such a transition, they still need to be raised to be independent, and a safe and functional approach can be the purchase of montessorian or montessori beds.

These are not only choices with an educational purpose, but also very interesting design options. As part of a furnishing scheme that makes little ones feel autonomous and protected, having beds that decorate and perform an educational growth function is certainly not a factor to be ignored. So let’s see which are the best in our catalogue!

A short excursus: the Montessori Method

In 1909, the Italian pedagogue and educator Maria Montessori published a very important text in the field of education: “The method of scientific pedagogy applied to child education in Children’s Homes”. It is a formulation of what would later be called the Montessori Method; the education of the child is oriented towards the encouragement of his or her spirit of independence, towards a principle of order and harmony inherent in every child by nature.

It is a well codified and specific process, of which we could mention some basic rules to give an idea of how educators and parents who embrace to the method behave:

  • educate children towards independence and autonomy
  • do not prevent a child from doing something because it is too little
  • educate them in order, precision and harmony
  • not forcing children to do something and intervening as little as possible
  • encourage contact and care with nature
  • develop talents
  • never speak negatively to or about the child in front of him/her (or behind his/her back)
  • guide them by involving them and not by instructing them.

Every sphere of the child’s educational life can pass through the method, even a correct sleeping habit. Montessori beds, in a well-designed bedroom, fit in In this context.

How to choose them and why

Before choosing the right one among the many models available online, let’s take a look at some characteristics to consider. As with wooden toys, placed in a specific context such as a montessori room, a montessori bed will certainly be much more interesting and useful.

As far as size and dimensions are concerned, base yourself on the age of the child, as well as his height; consider whether to take a toddler model, that is one that “grows” progressively with the child, or one that is specific to his age. The two most popular designs are the playhouse or the hut design, but you can also choose a model without a structure, but this will be less creatively stimulating for the child.

The advantages are various; in addition to the aforementioned education in independence and autonomy, posture and comfort will also benefit. Since Montessori beds are low beds that are only a few centimetres off the ground, and often have small raised edges, the risk of children falling and hurting themselves is practically nil. In addition, you can encourage your child’s initiative and tendency to tidy up by involving him in the choice of the bed, decorating and colouring it, making him feel safe and secure by placing the Montessori bed near the wall, facing the door (which will always remain open), with lights hanging from it.

Education bonus!

To give you some food for thought and a little furniture inspiration, we leave you with a few words on what to add to a Montessori bedroom.

Obviously, since we have to ask for an expert’s opinion, we are giving you the advice of Sara F., mother, educator and Babycare consultant for ProduceShop:

“For my baby, and for the mums and dads I follow, I decided to adopt a practical and standardized approach. All you need to do to create a beautiful room furnished according to the Montessori Method is a few things; the rest is personal taste and imagination. The two basic rules are: everything child-friendly – everything accessible. In addition to a nice bed like the Wigee or Cott, to teach children to dress independently, evaluate low wardrobes, small hangers and drawers; for playtime, low shelves and racks to tidy up everything. Creativity, which should always be at the forefront, should be encouraged with child-sized tables and chairs where children can sit and draw, play, create and undo. A soft carpet and a mirror make all the difference: safety is enhanced by a soft surface, coordination and self-control by a constant reflection. “

So it’s bedtime already? Great!
All you have to do is choose one of our Montessori House or Hut Beds from the ProduceShop catalogue; sound sleep for the little ones, peaceful nights for mum and dad!
